Common Causes
Requirements
- Windows 11 must be activated and fully updated. See How to update Windows.
- No specific hardware requirements, but a larger screen makes using multiple windows easier.
Step‑by‑step Guides
Using Snap Layouts (Creating Arrangements)
Method 1: Maximise Button Hover
- Hover your mouse cursor over the Maximise button (⛶) on any window title bar.
- A small menu will appear showing four layout options.
- Hover over different layouts to see a preview of how the window will be arranged.
- Click on the desired zone within the layout to snap your window there.
Method 2: Win + Z Keyboard Shortcut
- With the window you want to snap active, press Win + Z.
- The Snap Layouts menu appears directly under the window’s title bar.
- Use the arrow keys or your mouse to select the desired layout and zone.
Method 3: Drag or Taskbar Snap
- Drag a window to the left, right, or top edge of the screen until a translucent outline appears, then release to snap.
- Alternatively, right‑click the window’s taskbar icon, choose Snap, and then select the desired layout.
Filling Remaining Slots
After snapping one window, Windows 11 shows live thumbnails of your other open windows in the remaining empty zones. Clicking a thumbnail snaps that window into the open zone.
- Example: You snap Outlook to the left side. Windows shows your open browser, Teams, and File Explorer on the right side. Click the browser thumbnail, and it snaps to the right.
Resizing Snapped Windows
- Mouse: Click and drag the thin dividing line between windows to readjust them. The adjacent windows resize automatically.
- Keyboard: Select a snapped window and press
Win + Left ArroworWin + Right Arrowto move it to another zone. Other windows resize to accommodate where possible.
Groups
Creating a Snap Group
A Snap Group is the collection of windows you have snapped together.
- Arrange your desired windows on the screen using Snap Layouts.
- Resize by dragging the borders until they fit your preferred dimensions.
- Ta‑da! The group is created automatically and the windows are associated with each other.
Using a Snap Group
Once a group is created, you can manage all its windows together.
- Hover over any window in the group (or minimise and restore one).
- This unfreezes the Group Title/Taskbar Preview, which appears as a bar hovering above the taskbar icons when multiple windows in the group are open.
- Hover over the taskbar icon of a group member to see a preview of the entire group.
-
From the preview:
- Restore the group: Minimises all other apps/windows and shows only the snapped group.
- Close the group: Closes all windows in the group at once.
- Swap windows: Replace a window within the group arrangement with another open window.
Tips and Tricks
- Virtual desktops: Snap Layouts work independently on each virtual desktop (see KB‑006).
- Tablet mode: Snap assists behave more generously when the device is in tablet mode or a touch‑optimised interface is active.
- Multiple monitors: Snap Layouts operate independently on each monitor.
Troubleshooting
- Layouts not appearing:
- Ensure you are not hovering exactly on the edge of the screen.
- Check Settings > System > Multitasking and verify that "Snap windows" is toggled On.
- Make sure the app window is not maximised (hovering over the maximise button on a maximised window may behave slightly differently).
When to Seek Further Assistance
If the multitasking features are not working consistently across applications, it may indicate corrupted system files or a need for a Windows repair. You can open a ticket for further help.
