Office apps activation issues
Summary
This guide helps you troubleshoot and resolve: Office apps activation issues. Follow the steps below to fix the issue.
Common Causes
Office apps activation issues
Step 1: Verify your Microsoft 365 subscription
Ensure the user’s account has an active Microsoft 365 licence:
- Open the Microsoft 365 admin centre (or ask your administrator).
- Confirm the licence is assigned to the correct user.
- If the licence has expired, renew it before proceeding.
Step 2: Sign in with the correct account
Office apps must be signed in with the account that holds the licence.
- Open any Office app (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
- Go to File → Account and check the signed‑in user.
- If the wrong account is displayed, click Sign out and then Sign in with the correct credentials.
If you cannot sign in, see Cannot login to company portal for troubleshooting steps.
Step 3: Run the Office Activation Troubleshooter
Windows includes a built‑in troubleshooter that can resolve many activation problems.
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Activation.
- Click Troubleshoot and follow the prompts.
- Restart the computer if the troubleshooter makes changes.
Keeping Windows up to date helps prevent activation issues. See How to update Windows for guidance.
Step 4: Check licence status with ospp.vbs
Use the Office Software Protection Platform script to view activation details.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt (right‑click Start → Windows Terminal (Admin)).
- Navigate to the Office installation folder, e.g.:
cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16" - Run the command:
cscript ospp.vbs /dstatus - Review the output for the licence status and any error codes.
Step 5: Common activation error messages
- 0xC004F074 – The licence server is unavailable. Verify internet connectivity and retry.
- 0xC004C003 – The product key is blocked. Contact your administrator for a valid key.
- 0xC004F074 after a hardware change – The activation token may need to be refreshed (see Step 6).
Step 6: Re‑activate after a hardware change
Significant hardware changes can invalidate the existing activation token.
- Open any Office app and sign out, then sign back in to force re‑activation.
- If the issue persists, run the activation troubleshooter again (Step 3).
- As a last resort, use the
ospp.vbs /actcommand to attempt manual activation.
Step 7: Reinstall Office if activation still fails
When troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, a clean reinstall may be required.
- Uninstall Office via Settings → Apps → Microsoft 365.
- Download the latest installer from the Microsoft 365 portal.
- Run the installer and sign in with the licensed account.
