Understanding and Using Windows 11 Snap Layouts and Groups
Summary
Snap layouts (also known as Aero Shake in previous versions) allow you to arrange multiple applications on your screen efficiently. Snap groups save these arrangements for quick restoration. This guide explains how to use these multitasking features.
Requirements
- Windows 11 must be activated and fully updated.
- No specific hardware requirements, but a larger screen makes using multiple windows easier.
Step-by-Step Guides
Using Snap Layouts (Creating Arrangements)
#### Method 1: Maximize Button Hover- Hover your mouse cursor over the Maximize button (⛶) on any window title bar.
- A small menu will appear showing 4 layout options.
- Hover over different layouts to see a preview of how the window will be arranged.
- Click on the desired zone within the layout to snap your window there.
- With your desired window active, press Win + Z.
- The Snap Layouts menu will appear directly under the window's title bar.
- Use arrow keys or your mouse to select the desired layout and zone.
- Open the Task View (Win + Tab or click the Task View icon).
- Hover over the window you want to snap in the list of open windows.
- Click the "Snap" (border icon) that appears on the window's thumbnail.
- Choose the layout and zone.
Filling Remaining Slots
After snapping one window, Windows 11 will show live thumbnails of your other open windows in the remaining empty zones. Clicking on one of these thumbnails will snap it into an open zone.
- Example: You snap Outlook to the left side. Windows shows your open browser, Teams, and File Explorer on the right side. Click the browser thumbnail, and it snaps to the right.
Resizing Snapped Windows
- Mouse: To readjust snapped windows, click and drag the thin dividing line between them. The other windows will adjust automatically (they "glue" together).
- Keyboard: Click on a snipped window and press Win + Left/Right Arrow to move it from one side to another. The other windows will resize to accommodate if possible.
Groups
Creating a Snap Group
A Snap Group is the collection of windows you've snapped together.
- Set up your desired windows on the screen using Snap Layouts.
- Play around with resizing by dragging the borders to ensure they fit your desired dimensions.
- Ta-da! The group is "automatically" created and associated with each other.
Using a Snap Group
Once a group is created, you can manage all windows in it together.
- Hover over a window in the group (or minimize and restore one).
- This unfreezes the Group Title/Taskbar Preview which appears as a bar hovering above the taskbar icons (if multiple windows in the group are open).
- Hover over the taskbar icon for one of the group members to see a preview of the entire group.
- From the preview:
- Close the group: Close all windows in the group at once.
- Swap windows: You can swap out windows within the group arrangement.
Tips and Tricks
- Virtual Desktops: Snap layouts work independently on each Virtual Desktop (check KB-006).
- Tablet Mode: Snap assists work differently (or are more generous) when the device is in tablet mode or touch-optimized interface is active.
- Multiple Monitors: Snap Layouts work independently on each monitor.
Troubleshooting
- Layouts not appearing:
- Check Settings > System > Multitasking and ensure "Snap windows" is toggled On.
- Ensure the app window is not maximized (hovering over the maximize button on a maximized window should still show layouts, but it behaves slightly differently).
When to Seek Further Assistance
If the multitasking features are generally not working consistently across applications, it might indicate corrupted system files or a need for a Windows repair.
