Problem
You need to recover a previous version of a file, or you're unable to find a file that was recently modified or deleted.
Why Version History Matters
- Accidentally overwrote a file? Restore a previous version
- Need to see changes made over time? Access version history
- Deleted a file? Recover it from the Recycle Bin or OneDrive
Solutions
Method 1: OneDrive for Business (Cloud Files)
Check Version History:
1. Go to onedrive.com and sign in
2. Navigate to the file
3. Right-click the file → "Version history"
4. You'll see a list of versions with dates
5. Click a version to preview
6. Click "Restore" to make it the current version
7. Or click "Download" to keep a copy
Recover a Deleted File:
1. Go to OneDrive → "Recycle Bin" (left sidebar)
2. Find your deleted file
3. Right-click → "Restore"
Method 2: SharePoint/SharePoint Online
Check Version History:
1. Go to the SharePoint site
2. Navigate to the document library
3. Right-click the file → "Version history"
4. View and restore previous versions
Method 3: Local File History (Windows 11)
If File History was enabled:
1. Search for "File History" in Start menu
2. Click "Restore personal files"
3. Browse through backups
4. Find the file you need
5. Click the "Restore" button to restore to original location
Method 4: Recover from Recycle Bin
Check the Recycle Bin:
1. Open the Recycle Bin on your desktop
2. Look for your deleted file
3. Right-click → "Restore"
4. The file returns to its original location
Note: Files in Recycle Bin are permanently deleted after 30 days (may vary).
Method 5: Previous Versions (NTFS)
For files on mapped drives or local drives:
1. Right-click the file or folder in File Explorer

3. See a list of previous versions
4. Double-click to open a version
5. Or click "Restore" to overwrite current version
