Antivirus alerts - what to do
Summary
This guide helps you troubleshoot and resolve: Antivirus alerts - what to do. Follow the steps below to fix the issue.
Common Causes
Antivirus Alerts - What to Do - Windows 11
Understanding Antivirus Alerts
What Are They?
Windows Security (built into Windows 11) protects your computer from viruses and malware. When it finds a threat, it will alert you.
Types of Alerts
- Virus detected - Malicious software found
- Threat blocked - Something dangerous was stopped
- Firewall blocked an app - An app tried to access the network
- Suspicious activity - Something looks wrong
What To Do When You See an Alert
If It Says "Threat Detected" or "Virus Detected"
1. Don't panic! The alert may have already blocked it
2. Click on the alert to see details
3. Follow recommended actions:
- Quarantine: Isolate the file (recommended)
- Remove: Delete the file completely
- Allow: Only if you're certain it's safe
4. Run a full scan to make sure nothing else is there
If Windows Deletes a File
- It may have been a dangerous file
- Check your trash if you need to recover it (risky!)
- Better to let Windows keep you safe
If a Program is Blocked
- Was the program trying to access the internet?
- Did you recently install something new?
- If it's a program you trust, you can allow it:
1. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security
2. Click Firewall & network protection
3. Allow an app through firewall (if needed)
Running a Manual Scan
Quick Scan (Fast):
1. Press Win + I > Privacy & security
2. Click Windows Security > Virus & threat protection
3. Click Quick scan
Full Scan (Thorough):
1. Same location as above
2. Click Scan options
3. Select Full scan
4. Click Scan now
5. This may take 30-60 minutes
If You Think It's a False Alarm
- Was the file something you downloaded?
- Was it from an email attachment?
- If you're unsure, search the filename online
- You can submit to Microsoft for analysis
Common False Positives
- Some programs that modify system files
- Cracked software
- Very old programs
- Unusual file names
To Check quarantined items:
1. Windows Security > Virus & threat protection
2. Click "Protection history"
3. See what was blocked
Best Practices
- Keep Windows Security turned ON
- Don't install two antivirus programs (they conflict)
- Keep Windows updated
- Don't click suspicious links in emails
- Only download from trusted sources
If You Need Another Antivirus
- Windows Security is usually sufficient
- If installing another, uninstall Windows Security first
- Popular alternatives: Bitdefender, Malwarebytes, Norton
